Pitch Feedback

I spoke to two different people via zoom. I gave them my pitch. This is their feedback. Although I spoke to real people, I do not know if they’re legitimate in the industry.

THE STRUGGLE FOR KATHY’S SOUL is a gorgeously grounded queer romance set amongst the backdrop of 1970s social work. Kathy and Susan’s connection felt real and lived in – even amidst the brief descriptions. That said, I craved a clearer sense of what was driving the interpersonal conflict between them. How are the social pressure and realties of 1970s forcing conflict between them?

Does Kathy’s Christian values create some internalized homophobia within her? If she wants family and Susan craves independence, how are they able to find middle ground, and how does their social work influence that evolution? And where does Susan’s desire for independence originate from – and how does Kathy’s presence then challenge that belief? I’m passing primarily because this type of story isn’t genre oriented enough for what Red Wagon produces, but I wish you the best of luck with the project!

This pitch was pretty strong. I was pulled into the characters and their journey, interested to know how it all shakes out. While I am not 100% sure that a story about 2 social workers in the 1970s will garner support when it comes to fundraising, if the script is strong, there is always a shot. There are a handful of wonderful same sex love stories that have reached audiences, so hope this one does too.
